Midterm Reflection: The Road Ahead

During the beginning of the new semester, I knew that English 1102 would be a far more rigorous course than 1101. Majority of the time in 1101, my class were working on essays and research papers. Now however, I know realize that this is not a traditional English course. From the very beginning, this class has focused more on technology then actual written work. Only recently am I now receiving grades to know what skills that I need to improve on. One of my biggest faults that I’ve always had as a writer is that I’m a bit of a scatter brain. When I start writing, the ideas from my head begin to flow out through the pencil. The problem however, is that it never comes out on congruently and a lot of my work contains run-on sentences. This caused my work to lose points on careless mistakes. I hope by the time this course, my writing skills would have drastically improved.  With this class being graded on a point system, I am given many opportunities to different assignments to boost my grade point pool. Have completed many different online quizes,  that are on the Guide to First-Year Writing Book as well as turned in the major projects in on time. If I continue what I’m doing now, I am guaranteed to finish this course with an A. The project that I enjoyed the most was the built-environment assignment I did on Downtown Decatur. I had a great time taking pictures and documenting what I saw while I was there and felt it was a very important way for...

Midterm Reflection

Differences and Similarities I remember in high school, writing was very traditional. We would put pen on paper, and write about the book we had just read in class. In this class, I have not picked up a pencil at all. Everything is online and I am analyzing the architecture of various places. I do recognize looking for meanings behind certain things in high school, and I see that this class also contains that. I also feel like I have done more primary research in this class than all my other English classes combined, but I do not solely attribute that to this class. College in general is a bit more hands on than high school ever was. The Work Primary and secondary research can prove o be interesting. Doing primary research allows you to get first hand accounts, which provides a very different experience than researching something on a computer. Doing research can help give you ideas when you are writing by providing information on the topic. When it comes to the reading summaries, I will make sure to find better ways to integrate photos, and put captions to help readers while they read my work. I will use what I have learned concerning multi-modality to help enhance the experience of readers of my work. The rhetorical situation we are addressing in our assignments is the rhetoric of the built environment. The rhetoric of the built environment include why certain areas are designed the way they are....

Midterm Reflection

Midterm Reflection Entering this class, I felt an abundance of uneasiness since I did not take English 1101 prior. I had not done analytical writing since my junior year of high school, and the AP English composition class I took then was by far the hardest class I took in high school. Although I ended the class with an A, and passed the AP exam with a 4, I struggled to keep up with work throughout the semester. Three semesters later, I am in this class, and despite my uneasiness, I am extremely grateful to my high school instructor, Amy Lydigsen, who fully prepared me to do well in this class. In her class, I also had course work to do online through WordPress. I learned to utilize active verbs to describe the author’s intent, think on a higher level, and was encouraged to broaden my vocabulary. So far, in class, I have been exposed to research writing, which is very different from what I did in high school. The type of writing I did in the AP course was mostly based on the analyzing of rhetorical elements the authors use in order to convey a message. This class is partially analyzing, but mostly synthesizing, which I had not done much of before. It is challenging to summarize text without stealing the author’s words, and meeting word requirements. The last time I did research-based writing was in the eighth grade surprisingly enough. That year, I had to complete a ten-paged paper which was ridiculous in my...
