Mid-term Reflection

The academic writing process in this class is slightly different from my past experiences with English courses. This class focuses a lot on secondary research, which has broadened my knowledge of the writing process. I have learned that the more time you put into the research behind a piece of writing the easier it is to compose it and get your point across to the audience. I plan to dig deeper with my research and annotations for the rest of the assignments this semester. For reading summaries 3 and 4 I annotated the entire article and did some background research before starting my essay and found that this really improved the quality of my piece. I think that the writing I am doing in this class has an audience of mostly my classmates, but because this is a blog, anyone can read it. My built environment descriptions may act as reviews for certain areas in Atlanta. For people interested in visiting the area I reported on, the descriptions will help them get a better of idea of that space. As far as strengths and weaknesses go I have discovered new ones as a writer during the time I have been in this course. I tend to excel when it comes to wording and organization of pieces. However, I often forget to incorporate other forms of media such as video, maps, sounds, and photos in my work. I am so used to writing essays where the only thing on the page are words that I find it sort of taboo to add in a video or sound clip in the...

Retrospecting about 1102( Midterm Reflection)

When I walked into the internal environment of English 1102 I assumed it would be a traditional style of class. The connected chairs and desks were lined up in a formal way that signifies that the class is a traditional setting. The professor’s desk was placed in front of the whole class rather than being placed in the middle. Also, the white board was stationed behind the desk. So through these physical features, it was easy to conclude that it was going to be another “English class” that was required for my major. After an introduction of the class given by the professor, the regular grading system was replaced by a point system. classroom setting Before even delving into the the contents of the assignments I have to complete, the whole idea of the point system changed my perception on how I do my school work. Everyone involved in the class are more connected than we think. The amount of points everyone received were relative to each other, which made the class atmosphere more competitive. There will be outliers who don’t care whether or not if we had a point system or not, but for the most part, the points makes us be more aware of our class surroundings. example of a point system( not a class version though) The style of research is different than how I usually do them, because of one major factor; intensive use of your website. I was taught to write in forms of indented block paragraphs that flowed and remain cohesive throughout the text without the use of other modes of communications. The...

Midterm (2nd draft) 2/17/2016

So in my experience, I have not had a lot of writing through technology in my English classes before this one; I find it better in many ways this present English class is more technology based. At first, I was extremely scared to work with almost everything that had to do with technology because I have always been used to “book tests, essays, papers, group projects, and pure lecture based class instruction with the typical classic set environment.” Now, ever since we have used more of the internet space for most of the assignments, or well blog for basically everything, I find it easier than what I thought it would end up being. I was extremely worried about how the teacher would grade me because I always had a lot of trouble with my writing. In English 1102 with all honesty I feel like I have trouble with the fast paced due dates for each thing, making it harder for me to write at my best since I also have other classes and activities and work. I have no issues reading articles, but It is harder for me to focus and pick out the main points I need to summarize when the articles are extremely long and I have little time. I also have trouble with making a good summary, sometimes I feel like it sounds lame when I try to summarize or that I repeat myself or just a lot of bad things in my writing. Overall, I feel like I could do better with more time instead of being in a fast paced mode; also I do...

Midterm Reflection

Criticism is possibly the best thing one person can give another. Criticism is like little packets of cheat sheets, or knowledge and giving it to someone can benefit them a large amount. However, taking it and learning how to decode those little packets is the challenge. For me, I have learned to take it and learn from it, not take offense and this has helped me greatly. In a class design such as this one, it is important to be able to take criticism and become comfortable with the aspect of making your work public. At first, this took time for me as I felt very self conscious about the prospect of people seeing my work and seeing the flaws. To be honest, I was struggling quite a lot in the beginning since I did not really have any confidence in my work. However, as time went on, I learned that as long as I gave it my all, that it would be fine. After all, that is all a person can do, is it not? While on the topic of giving it my all, I have done quite a lot of extra credit activities and taken time to come up with other ways to earn points. I do not just separate time for this course, I pour large amounts of time into this class, often at the expense of sleep. As a result, I do not feel disappointed in myself when it comes to this class. I put a large amount of work and effort into it and the results should speak for themselves. As for having room...

Midterm Reflection

Sophia John Dr. Wharton English 1102 February 15, 2015   So far throughout the course of this class, my writing style and composition has evolved an changed drastically. In the past I have been taught to understand a subject matter and write papers based solely upon the information I was given. In this class I have learned to write based on my own first hand experience and primary sources in which I have gathered myself. I now view writing as an outlet of expressing my own opinions and style in my writing rather than reiterating information that has simply been handed to me. I admire how this class gives students the opportunity to go and physically see and observe the spaces in which we are to write about because it gives each person to experience the same site in a different and personal light. The reading summaries and annotated bibliographies have also improved my summarization skills and has allowed me to really practice mastering the art of condensing writing into short highly useful and informational pieces. While composing my reading summaries and annotated bibliographies, I try to gear my writing toward anyone that is interested in the subject and those who need a short paragraph of useful, highly knowledgeable information. I have learned to incorporate key ideas and important facts from a whole article into bullet points and then later go back and write a brief description to each of these bullet points. When I have finished this step, I finally go back and piece together and add all parts of my writing together to form a useful summary...

Midterm Reflection: The Road Ahead

During the beginning of the new semester, I knew that English 1102 would be a far more rigorous course than 1101. Majority of the time in 1101, my class were working on essays and research papers. Now however, I know realize that this is not a traditional English course. From the very beginning, this class has focused more on technology then actual written work. Only recently am I now receiving grades to know what skills that I need to improve on. One of my biggest faults that I’ve always had as a writer is that I’m a bit of a scatter brain. When I start writing, the ideas from my head begin to flow out through the pencil. The problem however, is that it never comes out on congruently and a lot of my work contains run-on sentences. This caused my work to lose points on careless mistakes. I hope by the time this course, my writing skills would have drastically improved.  With this class being graded on a point system, I am given many opportunities to different assignments to boost my grade point pool. Have completed many different online quizes,  that are on the Guide to First-Year Writing Book as well as turned in the major projects in on time. If I continue what I’m doing now, I am guaranteed to finish this course with an A. The project that I enjoyed the most was the built-environment assignment I did on Downtown Decatur. I had a great time taking pictures and documenting what I saw while I was there and felt it was a very important way for...
