Mid-term Reflection

The academic writing process in this class is slightly different from my past experiences with English courses. This class focuses a lot on secondary research, which has broadened my knowledge of the writing process. I have learned that the more time you put into the research behind a piece of writing the easier it is to compose it and get your point across to the audience. I plan to dig deeper with my research and annotations for the rest of the assignments this semester. For reading summaries 3 and 4 I annotated the entire article and did some background research before starting my essay and found that this really improved the quality of my piece. I think that the writing I am doing in this class has an audience of mostly my classmates, but because this is a blog, anyone can read it. My built environment descriptions may act as reviews for certain areas in Atlanta. For people interested in visiting the area I reported on, the descriptions will help them get a better of idea of that space. As far as strengths and weaknesses go I have discovered new ones as a writer during the time I have been in this course. I tend to excel when it comes to wording and organization of pieces. However, I often forget to incorporate other forms of media such as video, maps, sounds, and photos in my work. I am so used to writing essays where the only thing on the page are words that I find it sort of taboo to add in a video or sound clip in the...

Midterm Reflection

I have realized that in every college course that I have taken that requires research and application, things are done differently. Every professor has a different approach but the theme of it all remains the same. In other classes we have been required to write papers based off of our own knowledge, other’s testimonies, but in this particular class we tend to do lots of writing based off of texts, statistical data and research, and our own primary research, which by the way was very exciting to do. While doing the class projects we are allowed to do it all. We have the reading summaries where we interpret someone else’s articles and research, find and build our own research through annotated bibliographies, and my favorite, observe and evaluate built environments through our own eyes and senses. I have learned that if it was possible, I would prefer to always perform primary research, it’s much more exciting and a lot of research is biased or opinionated, can be factual, but it’s important to make sure that you have the correct information at all times. That is why if you are going to use secondary research, it is important to use credible sources that provide factual and correct information. In this class I have been learning how to do proper research, and even been able to improve my citation skills, which I could of always used some help. I plan on taking this new and improved knowledge and applying it to my remaining projects. In this class environment, we write for one another in our blog posts. Before this class I...

Midterm Reflection

With completing all of the assignments so far, I have learned a great deal about the subjects of the assignments I have done. The readings about the homeless informed me about their lifestyle. I also enjoyed the articles about gender because I did not realize there was even an issue there. My writing process and research are definitely different in this class from past classes. In the past, I have not really gone to a site to take notes and do the research. Instead, I have gotten my information from sources like articles or books. My writing process is different really only because of the type of writing we are doing in this class. We are doing more summaries and analysis than writing about past events or making arguments. Primary research is more interesting to me than secondary research because I get to go out and find the information myself. I have learned from this class that the better the research is, the better the writing can be. The assignments that I have done so far will help me do a better job on future assignments because I feel like I have a better idea of what is expected.  This is the first time I am posting my work like this, and i’m not quite sure if I like it. The posts that I have created have been written with the intent of my peers and professors being the audience. The information given in my posts could help inform the reader more about the topic of the post. Also, the integration of multimodality has allowed me to be a little more...

Mid-term Reflection

In previous classes I have learned to write by being timed. I learned that under pressure I will do some of my best work. However, I do believe that if I could review my work before submission and made sure it was free of errors I would do a lot better. However, I never did learn to go back and check for errors. It was always an urgent matter to send my writings on time, with no time to fix my grammar or spelling. In the past I didn’t have time to do research, the research would always be given to me before hand, and I would just have to write about what I read. In this class I have learned that I will be given the assignment but I have to go find it as well. Such as going to the library to pick up a copy of the book, or go to the GSU library website and find a PDF form on there. Recently with the built environment description essay’s I had to drive to a site to see how the environment itself was, and conduct research. That is something different that I never thought I had to do. Im not complaining though going out and visiting something new was very interesting and fun to do, ad I don’t mind not one bit. I have learned that primary research is any type of research that I collect through my observations, surveys, etc. Secondary research is still something I haven’t quite figured out yet. I believe it has to do with revising or adding onto someones primary research....

Mid-Term Reflection

Information presented to me by this class’ coursework has proven to enhance my style of writing. In the past I have learned that when writing summaries to include commentary and information attained from further research to build on what the author has said. In this class I have learned that summaries should include nothing but a shorter form of what was written, how it was written and what is trying to be portrayed through the words. What I have learned about research and writing for this class is how to properly write an annotated bibliography because in the past I did not cite things properly and summarize the information properly. Writing for the built environment has taught me a lot on reflecting on my environment, which helps build patience and awareness. Sitting and reflecting on what I observed through the course of the hour at the Atlanta beltline made me realize things I have never see before even though I frequently visit the trail. The rhetorical situation for the compositions I have written in this class are as follows: The subject of my compositions have been on built environment and what all it means and how it is represented in and around the city of Atlanta, as a writer I have to compose works which reflect on what I have learned, and the readers must be properly informed by what I have to say but not persuaded to feel any way by my...
