Wakefield, Julie. “Fighting Obesity Through the Built Environment.” Environmental Health Perspectives 112.11 (2004): A616–A618. Print. Obesity in America is a growing epidemic. Although genetics plays a role in the occurrence of obesity, the rapid spread of the epidemic within the last 30 years has caused researchers and architects alike to extract a main component from that spread: the environment of the individual. The introduction of a built environment could be a solution to help dwindle those rising numbers. Architectural companies want to integrate spaces into the built environment that allow more physical activity. More physical activity (especially in nature) can help induce society to spend more time being outside and exercising. There are also companies (Nike being one of them) that are to produce more “active” products such as a FitBit to show that there are initiatives for increased physical activity and to keep track of the progress. “Built Environment- LEED, Energy Star and EarthCraft.” N.p., n.d. Web. 10 Apr. 2016. The growth of energy-efficient buildings in Atlanta has quantified tremendously. The newer buildings that are taking heed to energy preservation are the Falcons Stadium and the College Football Hall of fame, to name a few. Philips Arena is also the first NBA stadium to obtain its LEED certification. The certification was presented to the stadium in 2009, less than a decade ago. Atlanta is currently in the top 10 for energy-efficient buildings which include LEED and Energy Star. Atlanta is also second in the nation when it comes to LEED-certified event spacing. The booming metropolitan city has 6.5 million square feet that are covered by the energy-efficient buildings,...

“Atlanta Reduces Homeless Population (and Saves Money in the Process) – Dec. 11, 2014.” N.p., n.d. Web. 10 Apr. 2016. Focusing on the increasingly prevalent issue of homelessness inside the perimeter, Atlanta’s Innovation Delivery Team created a way to get more people off of the streets and to save money while doing. The reason why hundreds of other organizations weren’t prospering in helping homelessness dwindle was because all of these organizations had certain areas and criterias in mind, none of which had a common goal. The team helped analyze what the nation’s need was ended up forming a collective called ATL311. ATL311 is a helpline that has reduced the average call time from 120 seconds to 20 seconds. The basis of this line is to improve customer service, thus furthering the city with more connectedness. “VISIT Krog Street Tunnel: A Street Art Haven | the FEED Atlanta.” N.p., n.d. Web. 10 Apr. 2016. Located in betwixt Inman Park and Cabbagetown, the Krog Street Tunnel has been a prominent pillar of rebellion for the Atlanta community. It began as a graffiti-covered act of oppression and slowly transgressed into a visual melting pot. Many bands and companies do a pretty hefty amount of advertising on these colorful walls. There are also chili cook-offs and street festivals that fill up this tunnel to showcase the growing artistic realm of Atlanta. The space remains free to the public to tag and embellish. City Hall has also mentioned that it will remain a stomping ground for artists, musicians, and entrepreneurs alike until further notice. “Nature Enhances the Built Environment.” CREW Atlanta Blog. Recognizing Campus Landscapes as Learning Spaces by Scholl and Gulwadi

How a campus is constructed can very well be related to the amount of learning the student is partaking in and also how much of their concentration can be focused on education. This article highlights just how beneficial learning within nature can be and how much greenery affects the nervous system in a soothing, calming environment. The different types of learning spaces that are becoming increasingly more prominent are: indoor, urban, fringe, production landscapes, wilderness, and specific. These learning spaces also draw back to the different types or attention (direct or indirect) that can affect each student. Direct attention is most closely defined as when a student uses cognitive functions to ‘direct’ their attention towards their learning and focusing on the task presented to them. Indirection attention is something the landscape of a campus can indirectly affect because of the stimuli presented to students that makes their attention wander. Having nature and/or open spaces allows students to be able to take a breather from their studies which increases their retention amount. More often than not, students have “cram sessions” where they try to knock out everything they have learned in one sitting before a big exam. These sessions create tension within the student and make them irritable, thus prolonging their learning process. Allowing students to have open-air spaces can also increase their overall health and can lead to better cognition and retention. Having a malleable learning environment presents faculty, students, and staff with a unique way of living- both at work and at school. Modern techniques predominantly consist of copious amounts of infrastructure with technology heading the way. Technology...

Making Bathrooms More Accommodating by Emily Bazelon

Typically, the only type of restrooms you see in today’s businesses are MEN and WOMEN. Introducing gender-neutral restrooms (or restrooms specifically for transgender people and other minorities) is a step in the right direction to making this world more accommodating and open-minded. The Latin root of the word ‘accommodate’ means ‘to make fitting.’ Accommodation is compulsory in that it means the already-present stigmas have to step aside to allow room for the newer ones. This step over is whether they want to move over or not because of the way that society has been progressing in mainstream media and how gender fluctuation is being portrayed. Women and men alike have played the basic roles in gender since the dawn of time. Even with the two main gender roles, there is still “favoritism.” Men have urinals to speed up the process of using the restroom while women are regarded as “chatterboxes” who tend to use the restroom as an escape with their girlfriends from situations at hand. These minor differences impact modern society today because of the space used for each individual stall in women’s restrooms, thus making less individual spacing with more room. Having urinals for men was provided as an easy way out for the male species to essentially “handle their business” and get on with their day. Women are more often than not expected to hang around, fixing their makeup and chatting with the other women they went to the restroom with. Presenting gender-neutral restrooms would shed light on the other genders present and also make them more prevalent in making those genders not have to hide. Easing...

Better Online Living through Content Moderation by Model View Culture

The primary point of this article is to showcase just how detrimental online living can be. Content control features may prevent most cyber bullying from occurring, but it does not get down to the root of the source. Many label the victims as being overly sensitive which perpetuates a society that excuses cyber bullies from having to take responsibility for their actions in the cyber world. Not only are the victims of this abuse labeled as “weak,” but they are also subjected to exposure therapy without their knowledge. Having someone who has been diagnosed with PTSD (Post-Traumatic Stress Disorder) be subjected to this exposure therapy, unbeknownst to them, could cause severe damage to the psyche of the person and invoke lasting effects that are extremely destructive to the person’s sense of self. The article also goes into depth pertaining blocklists and the legalities involving them. The most prevalent online “cyber bully” is called Gamergate and they have done many things that go beyond cyber bullying and even extend into the real world. Gamergate can (and has) found addresses of their subjects homes and posted them online and has also threatened them via phone. A very prominent gamer, Zoe Quinn, is mentioned in the article about she has specifically been targeted and how women all over the world are specifically targeted to back down because of the image women are portrayed in in these video games. Another women that has been targeted by these cyber bullies, Anita Sarkeesian, is the founder of a female-dominated YouTube series called “Feminist Frequency” and is also the creator of “Tropes vs Women in Video...
